Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use my cards to do readings for myself?
BACK
Certainly, it's essential if you do Daily and/or Weekly draw card readings.
For simpler questions use a three card spread but just try not reading into the
cards what you want or hope they are trying to tell you and be as objective as
possible. I don't recommend doing readings on yourself using larger
spreads because the more cards there are the less objective you normally become.
These are my opinions and as always it is up to the individual reader how they
want to handle things.
Should I use my cards to do readings for my family and
friends? BACK
Possibly as practice and to learn your tarot cards but I honestly don't
recommend it and here are some reasons why.
1.) You can't be all that objective with, or about family and friends.
2.) You may say something that could cause riffs between you and your family, or
between you and your friends.
3.) If you screw things up then your family and friends will be the first to
tell others that you suck at the tarot and any hope of being considered even a
decent tarot reader diminishes sharply. And it does absolutely nothing for
your ego or confidence.
Important Note: Never do a reading for someone you dislike or despise.
There is no way you can give a true and unbiased reading.
These are my opinions and as always it is up to the individual reader how they
want to handle things.
What are some of the more popular books to use to learn the tarot with?
BACK
All I can do is give you my favorite three resources (in order of use):
Tarot-Plain and Simple
by Anthony Louis
Learning the Tarot
by Joan Bunning
The Complete Idiots Guide to Tarot
by Arlene Tognetti and Lisa Lenard
The second book has many neat exercises as does the 3rd book. You can also
find some exercises here on my Tarot Studies site. All the books above
deal with the Rider-Waite type deck (Anthony Louis' book uses the Robin Wood
tarot
cards which is a Rider-Waite type deck, and a good one at that).
You may hear a lot about a book called 78 Degrees of Wisdom by Rachel Pollack
and it was considered a good book when it was written 22 years ago (and still is
by some) but has lost a lot of punch over the years so I don't recommend it.
Personally I don't much care for the book but do quote from it on occasion.
Plus it's pricey and the 3 books above are all cheaper and better all-around.
The 2nd book also delves into numerology, astrology, dreams and a few other
goodies ... just enough to peek your curiosity.
If you can't afford any books go to Joan Bunnings site as the site is a mirror
reflection of her book Learning the Tarot. You can even download it so you
aren't using up internet time. This is an excellent beginners site/book.
Learning the Tarot Web Site
There are many, many, many other tarot books and I'm sure if you look on
either the Barnes and Noble site or Amazon.com site you will find one or two
that will tickle your fancy.
